How many pumpkins does a luxury porch installation require?

Scale is the difference between decoration and design. Here is how we calculate it.

Most homeowners underestimate quantity by roughly half. A standard covered porch with a six-foot stair run reads as intentional at around forty-five to seventy pieces, layered in three sizes. We begin with the architecture, not the pumpkin count. Entry width, riser height, column spacing and walkway length determine how much material the composition can carry before it reads as clutter. From there we build in three tiers: anchor pieces, mid-scale fill and small connective material that ties the arrangement to the stone.

Best heirloom pumpkin varieties for Idaho

The varieties that hold color, hold shape and survive a Treasure Valley October.

Idaho's dry autumn is generous to heirloom pumpkins. Cool nights deepen color and low humidity slows the soft rot that plagues wetter climates. Our working favorites include Jarrahdale for its blue-grey ribbing, Silver Moon and Casper for clean white forms, Cinderella for low, wide anchor pieces, and Long Island Cheese for a warm buff tone that flatters stone and stucco.

How P3 designs pumpkins around architecture

Fall décor should belong to the architecture. That principle drives every placement.

Every installation begins with proportion. We photograph the entry, measure the riser height and note the dominant exterior materials before a single pumpkin is selected. Symmetry is used where the architecture is symmetrical and deliberately broken where it is not. Color is chosen against the permanent materials of the home — stone, brick, stucco, stained timber — never against the season generically.
